Sick Notes (Fit Notes) – What You Need to Know
For Illnesses Lasting 7 Days or Less
- The NHS does not provide sick notes for the first 7 calendar days of illness.
- You must complete a Self-Certification (SC2) form, available from:
- Your employer
- The HMRC website
For Illnesses Lasting More Than 7 Days
- If your illness continues beyond 7 days, you may need an NHS sick note (also called a "Fit Note").
- Contact the surgery to request one—your GP may need to discuss your condition before issuing it.
Returning to Work
- You do not need a note from your GP to confirm you’re fit to return to work.
